The temple attracts around 1000 visitors a day, and approximately 5000 visitors during festivals. The present structure was built during 1720 to 1790 after the ancient structure was destroyed by the Portuguese in 1620. The temple is a significant symbol for the Tamil people, and has been mentioned since antiquity in Tamil literature, such as Manimekalai and Kundalakesi. The temple complex houses four gopurams (gateway towers) ranging from 20–25 feet in height, to the tallest being the eastern Raja Raja Gopuram soaring at 108 feet high. The temple seems to have been mentioned in the Brahmanda Purana. It is dedicated to Parvati who is known as Nagapooshani or Bhuvaneswari and her consort, Shiva who is named here as Nayinaar. In Lalitha trisathi, Hreem is used in 29 places for glorifying Goddess Bhuvaneswari. Hreemkara finds its place in various Upanishads – such as Bhavanopanishad, Sowbhagya Lakshmi Upanishad, Sri Sooktham and other prayers. The mantra ‘Hreem’ is known as Sakthi Pranavam. In human beings, she exists as Kundalini Sakthi and Sabthabrahmam. Her powers extend throughout the universe. Sri Bhuvaneswari represents knowledge and intelligence. She resides at Manidweepam, which was created out of Her own thought. She is worshipped by Brahma, Vishnu and Siva. Scriptures describe Her as brighter than thousand Suns, and wearing a crescent moon on Her crown. She is always well dressed, bedecked with Jewelry and gems of various kinds. Her smiling face is meant to cheer-up devotees for happiness. She carries weapons such as Paasam Angusam (for control of anger). She has 4 hands two of which bless the devotees.
